Union rights for Probationary Employees
Updated On: Jun 13, 2017
Sisters and Brothers, I wish to take a moment to address the abhorrent claims, made by members of management last Friday, regarding the representation our members receive from their Union. As a Union member, you have a seat at the bargaining table. Members have influence over how policy is drafted and how they will be impacted, as a result. Members have rights under our contract. For an example, members have the ability to file grievances against workplace practices, that are viewed as unjust. While there is a representational distinction between a Career-Tenured and a Career-Conditional employee. During a probationary status, an employee may have fewer avenues of recourse, if faced with an adverse action. In no way that does that mean any of our members are represented less. Make no mistake, every member is represented to the fullest levels allowed by law. The claims, such as those made the other day, are a clear attempt to subvert the strength of our Union. Blatant attacks, attempting to drive a wedge within our organization, will not go unanswered. We are reviewing all available actions that may be taken, in response. I know this week has created a sense of fear and a lot of questions. I have included a few websites, that may help answer some of those questions and ease concerns. One final thought, as a Union, our strength is forged in our solidarity. We use that strength to bring a meaningful democracy to the workplace. It is through that democracy, every member is empowered to be a part of a solution, to make a difference, and to shape and mold the future of our department. We stand together and we stand proud!
